3 Detroit Diesel Engine Models You Need To Know About

Detroit Diesel has designed and built heavy-duty engines for over 70 years. These very engines have been powering transportation and commerce across the globe, recognising Detroit Diesel as the industry's fuel economy leader. While the Environmental Protection Agency's emission regulations become more stringent year on year, Detroit Diesel consistently steps up to meet such requirements. Detroit Diesel strives to always make innovations in emissions, electronics, and aerodynamics, as well as maintain performance, reliability, and fuel economy.

Another reason behind Detroit Diesel’s edge above the rest, is their use of DDEC, Detroit Diesel Electronic Control for heavy-duty engines. The DDEC is a product comprising microprocessor controlled technology coupled with a unit injection system, and aims to provide consistent system self-diagnosis and engine protection diagnostics. The DDEC also improves engine performance and power, all while meeting emission requirements, as mentioned above.

Detroit Diesel Series 71

Detroit Diesel Series 71

Detroit Diesel introduced their first rendition of the Series 71 engines in 1938, with their two-stroke, inline six-cylinder 6-71. Series 71 engines were designed with cylinders displacing 71 cubic inches per cylinder, hence the number 71. These inline Detroit Diesel engine models were also available in one, two, three, four, and six cylinder configurations, allowing clients to have a larger range to choose from for their various needs.

Detroit Diesel then further introduced V-block versions in 1957, thus including six, eight, twelve, sixteen, and twenty four configurations. Series 71 had a limitless range of applications. 6V-71 were used largely for bus and coach builders, while the 8V-71 were used by fire truck manufacturers.

Detroit Diesel's Series 71 carried with it a myriad of advantages. The main benefit of the Series 71 engines has always been that their parts are interchangeable, owing to the fact that all Series 71 engines have the same basic design. This is ideal for engine maintenance and repair especially since parts are readily available and the machines' designs are known to most mechanics and engineers.

Series 71 engines also offered turbocharged or turbocharged/aftercooled models, which became outstanding engines for driving larger machinery. These Detroit Diesel engine models were widely used in the military and marine industries to provide force to larger pieces of machinery.

Detroit Diesel Series 60

Detroit Diesel Series 60

The Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine was introduced in 1987 as a four-stroke inline diesel engine, much stronger than its predecessors made also by Detroit Diesel. It proved to be a notch above the rest and more innovative for its time. The Series 60 engine was noticeably different from other highway-accepted motor engines as it used drive-by-wire electronic controls as well as overhead camshafts.

Series 60 engines are most commonly found in buses as it is able to power larger vehicles which would normally require more fuel than others. Detroit Diesel's Series 60 further made its mark by becoming the first ever heavy-duty diesel engine to include fully integrated electronic controls, thus allowing the engine to power a large vehicle with more efficiency and reliability.

Detroit Diesel’s Series 60 makes use of an advanced fuel system which adds to its cleanliness and performance value, as well as Detroit Diesel Electronic Control VI. The DDEC VI used in Series 60 was also a value-add considering its improvements in its microprocessor as compared to its earlier counterparts, making diagnostics more reliable and efficient as well.

Detroit Diesel DD15

Detroit Diesel DD15

Detroit Diesel’s DD15 is one of its most recent engine introductions which aims to offer world-leading efficiency, durability and performance. The DD15 engines were built for heavy-duty purposes, very much similar to Detroit Diesel’s Series 71 and Series 60, mentioned above.

The DD15 engine is up to three percent more fuel efficient than previous Detroit Diesel engine models, thanks to improved downspeeding and a swirl piston design for maximum combustion. It consists of an inline six-cylinder in its design and has been made for versatility, allowing it to be used in much more applications than before.

The high power engine in the DD15 has a peak output of approximately 500 hp (377 kW) at 1,625 rpm and 1,850 lb-ft torque at 975 rpm. It displaces 14.8 litres and has a gross combination weight rating of 36,300 kg.

Detroit Diesel’s DD15 also boasts a Heavy-Duty Engine Platform which meets fuel efficiency requirements. It is made with high-grade technology, four valves per cylinder, two overhead camshafts, a uniquely efficient fuel injection system, turbo compounding technology, and fully electronic engine management, allowing it to be one of the top heavy-duty engines to be used today.
