Detroit Diesel engines deliver best-in-class fuel efficiency and low-cost maintenance and service for miles and miles of peak performance. Every stage of our design, testing, and production processes ensures that every engine bearing the Detroit name is of the highest quality.

1 .Detroit Diesel Series 53

This category includes two different kinds of Detroit Diesel engines for sale:

  1. The four models that make up the IL53 (inline) are 253, 453, 353, and 653.

  2. The 4V53 and 6V53 variants are part of the V53.

The V53 has two unique cylinder heads, while the IL 53 series is known for having a single cylinder head at the top of the engine.

Unique to the Series 53 engines:

  1. A governor is located at the back of each engine on either side when you are looking at the engines from the back.

  2. The 53 series engines do not have any water manifolds, as can be seen when inspecting the top of other engines.

  3. Additionally, water pumps are found at the oil cooler rather than the blower.

2. Detroit Diesel Series 71

Detroit Diesel Series 71

The Detroit 71 series includes the following:

  1. The best in class 271, 371, 471, and 671 models are in line with the IL 71.

  2. The 6V71, 8V71, 12V71, and 16V71 engines are among the V71 engines.

The 53 sequences can also use the 71 series engines, and this solely depends on the amount of cylinders the engine has.

The air box covers that move along the sides of the 71 series engines are another thing to notice. The volume of the sheets can also vary depending on the number of cylinders an engine has, despite their seeming tiny size. You will even discover two different cylinder heads on the IL 71, one of which is aluminum and the other of which is cast iron. The cast iron cylinder has precise bolt connections at the cover's edge.

The IL 71 has two different types of cylinder heads: a cast iron head with connecting bolts along the cover's edge and an aluminum cylinder head with bolts running along the middle of the cover.

The number of various exhaust ports that are located on either side of the engine makes it easy to determine the size of the V71 engine you own. Additionally, each cylinder has an exhaust port in the engine. For example, an eight-cylinder engine has four components on either side while a six-cylinder engine has three exhaust ports roughly on either side of the engine.

3. Detroit Diesel Series 92

92 series engines are, in essence, 6V92s. The V engines 8V92, 12V92, and 16V92 are all of this type. The 92 series and V71 engines resemble each other more or less visually.

The differences between engines from the V71 and V92 series:

  1. V92 is pointed at the top, while the V71's top of the block is curved. Standing next to the engine and looking just beneath the cylinder head will also allow you to see this.

  2. When compared to the water pump on the V92 series engine, which is bolted to a plate instead of only being held by a snap ring, the water pump on the V71 series engine is held by a snap ring.

4. Detroit Diesel Series 149

Detroit Diesel Series 149

You will see that the 149 series consists of the 8V149, 12V149, and even the 16V149. The engine's bare block is twice as large as other blocks, and only the size of the engine distinguishes it from the 71, 53, and 92 series, respectively.

The square bore design of the 149 engine, which has a bore and stroke of 5.75 by 5.75 inches (146 mm 146 mm), is one of its distinguishing characteristics. Its power to weight is comparatively high.

The "pothead" design, which is common to all Series 149 engines, features overhead camshafts and cylinder heads that are integrated into the engine block. The "airbox" is the area of the block where the blowers are recessed as well. A substantial piece of steel is positioned above the blower and closes the top of the air box. An intercooler and occasionally a by-pass housing are present with the intercooler housing on a turbocharged engine.
