Detroit Diesel has a long history of making reliable diesel engines, dating all the way back to 1938. Today, Detroit is a part of the Daimler company that develops hybrid engine technology as well as developing, producing, selling, and servicing a full line of medium and heavy-duty diesel and alternative fuel engines for the transportation sector. Detroit is a pioneer in the heavy-duty diesel engine sector, with more than 800 approved service locations globally.

The world's first fully electronic diesel engine was developed in Detroit in 1987. The Series 60 engine family not only met and exceeded the power and torque demands of the client, but it also set new industry benchmarks for dependability and exceptional fuel efficiency. There have been more than 1,000,000 Series 60 engines made, and they may be found in virtually any heavy-duty chassis, including over-the-road coaches, industrial and construction machinery, and specialized fire apparatus. Detroit's tradition of high-quality products is still present today.

Detroit Diesel is a division of Daimler Truck AG that produces axles, gearboxes, and diesel engines only for on-highway use. In 2006, the former off-highway division was sold to MTU Friedrichshafen, and Rolls-Royce later acquired it in 2014.

Detroit Diesel Series 60 Engine

The Series 60 was the first engine in the world to totally rely on electronic engine controls, making it the most iconic Detroit Diesel engine part ever made. By 1992, the Series 60 was North America's most popular heavy-duty truck engine with over 1.2 million units sold since 1987. Trucks, boats, power generators, fire and emergency vehicles, and mining equipment have all made substantial use of it.

Detroit Diesel 53 Series Engine

In 1957, the Detroit 53 series two-cycle diesel made its debut. Despite using a blower of the roots type, like its bigger 71 Series brother, the engine is categorized as a naturally aspirated engine. The blower's function was to aid scavenging in the cylinder during the exhaust stroke, not just for performance purposes. Regardless of the total engine displacement, "53" indicates that each cylinder has a 53-cubic-inch displacement.

Detroit Diesel Series 71 Engine

Detroit Diesel Series 71 Engine

In 1938, the Detroit 71 series two-stroke diesel engine family made its debut. Later, in the late 1950s, the same engine was released in a V-block configuration. Regardless of layout or the overall number of cylinders, "71" indicates that each cylinder displaces 71 cubic inches.

Parts can be used with any of the designs because they all have a 4.25 inch bore and 5.00 inch stroke. Due to their widespread use in on-highway applications, the 6V-71 and 8V-71 are two of the most well-known engines in the 71 series family.

Detroit Diesel Series 92 Engine

In 1974, the Series 92 engines were released. The Series 92 engines, which took their name from the Series 92, were distinguished from the Series 71 engines they were derived from by having a larger and identical stroke of 5 inches for a notional displacement per cylinder of 92 cubic inches.

Detroit Diesel Series 110 Engine

A two-stroke cycle diesel engine series with a straight-6 cylinder design is the Detroit Diesel Series 110. (in keeping with the standard Detroit Diesel practice at the time, engines were referred to using a concatenation of the number of cylinders and the displacement, so this was a model 6-110). It was released in 1945 as the Detroit Diesel Engine Division of General Motors' second mass-market item.
